WHAT TO SEE AND WHERE TO EAT IN ATHENS

This is your ultimate Travel Guide to explore Athens, so be sure to take note of these remarkable places before you embark on your journey:

WHAT TO SEE

Acropolis

The monuments here are considered the greatest architectural achievements of ancient Greece. The Temple of Parthenon, dedicated to the goddess Athena, is perfectly proportioned and is considered the finest Doric masterpiece in the world (and there are many).

Advice: When visiting the Acropolis, be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the climb can be steep, but the breathtaking views are well worth it.

Temple of Poseidon

He may be the god of the oceans, but the palace of Poseidon sits 60 meters above sea level on Cape Sounion. This marble temple was first built by the ancient Athenians to honor Poseidon and guide sailors safely home.

Advice: Try to visit the Temple of Poseidon during sunset for a truly magical experience, as the view of the sun setting over the Aegean Sea is unforgettable.

National Gardens

This magnificent park was commissioned by Queen Amalia, Greece's first queen, in 1838 and was completed two years later. The gardens span 16 hectares of narrow gravel paths and ponds, as well as a small zoo with wild goats, peacocks, and chickens.

Advice: The National Gardens are a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city. Take a leisurely stroll, have a picnic, or simply relax and enjoy the tranquility.

National Archaeological Museum

Athens' preeminent museum houses the world's largest collection of Greek antiquities. Invaluable objects date from the Neolithic period (6800 BC) to the Cycladic, Mycenaean, and Classical periods.

Advice: Plan ahead and allocate enough time to explore the museum thoroughly. The artifacts on display offer a fascinating insight into Greece's rich history.

Cinema under the Stars

One of the great pleasures of Athenian summer is watching a movie in one of the city's many outdoor cinemas. In some of the finest and oldest theaters, like Cine Paris in Plaka, you can also enjoy a view of the Acropolis alongside the latest Hollywood blockbuster or a classic black-and-white film.

Advice: Check the local listings for screenings and bring a light jacket or blanket, as the evenings can sometimes get cool.

WHERE TO EAT

The view of the Acropolis from the rooftop of Strofi is one of the most impressive in the city. The menu is also amazing; expect traditional Greek dishes, including meze like smoked eggplant and a smooth and refreshing tzatziki. Price range: $$ - $$$

Two brothers have combined their Greek heritage with a passion for Spanish cuisine in this small tavern. The music is playing loudly, and the high-value and generous portioned dishes, most of which are cooked over wood, are overflowing with flavor. Price range: $$ - $$$

My personal favorite! The beautiful terrace is used to cultivate herbs for the dishes and offers stunning views of the Acropolis and the city. The seasonal Greek dishes are modern and skillfully prepared. Price range: $$$$

Greek and Japanese cuisine with classic French elements. The interesting and colorful dishes not only offer great value but are also excellent for sharing – it's a dilemma to choose what to eat! Price range: $$ - $$$

This carefully restored 1930s art deco restaurant seems destined to become the place to be seen once again. This luxury brasserie offers everything from Greek dishes to sushi. Price range: $$$
